Bass 14

BASS (British Arts and Street Sounds) is an annual festival held in Birmingham to celebrate Black music and arts. It is the UK’s only month long celebration of its kind. Bass is a boutique festival and has been going successfully for 9 years.

A range of facilities and activities are available at the festival. These include news commissions, gigs, exhibitions, master classes, showcases, club nights, theatre, conferences and film.

Every year, the BASS festival has a different theme. This year is ‘Made in Britain’. BASS is the only Black Music and Arts festival that commissions new work every year. It has always been a celebration of urban creativity and culture.

This year, BASS will from June 1st to June 14th. The festival will be held in various locations around Birmingham from colleges to music venues. There is an opportunity to get involved with all of these events and it is a great way to discover new talent.

The festival is great value for money; the highest admission price being £10. BASS has a lot of sponsors that help to support them and all that they do. Some of these sponsors include major brands/companies such as Instagram, BBC Radio 1 Xtra, European Union and Renowned.

Punch Records is the main partner with BASS. They were established in 1997 as a record store but have now grown in to a music/arts organization in the heart of Birmingham. They also work internationally and support Black music and art.

 Sweaty Eskimo

Sweaty Eskimo is a freelance artist from Birmingham, who has worked on advertising illustration projects for major brands like Adidas, Nandos, Boxfresh, Size? and Cadbury’s. He has also worked with ‘The Times’ on editorial illustration and cover artwork. Sweaty Eskimo, also known as Tahgasa Bertram, was influenced outside the industrial city Birmingham. He prefers to work with the organic flows of nature and often uses vibrant colours to accentuate the subject of his work.

Column Arts Agency’s William Astbury said:

“He is an incredibly talented artist and his unique style will add whole new dimension to the agency.”

Brummie illustrator Sweaty Eskimo (aka Tahgasa Bertram) likes to intertwine random elements and themes to create colourful visual soups. Switching between hand-drawn and vector, he is inspired by the organic shapes and flows of nature. He also loves a bit of Motown. A big fan of Milton Glaser, Sweaty Eskimo cites the designer as one of the main reasons he decided to ‘get into this drawing thing’.

Proposal

I intend to make a factual program around Day 10 of Bass14 – Made in the moment. The video will contain interviews with the artist, Sweaty Eskimo and the public, along with a time lapse of the live drawing and different clips of the public interacting with the event. A presenter will talk to the camera throughout the video, and a voice over will be used to provide information about both the artist and the event whilst fast paced cutaways are used. The piece will be around three minutes long, and appeal to an audience between 15 to 25 years. The intended audience will also enjoy or have a passion for the creative arts.

Treatment

 Communication Goals

I intend to make a factual program around Day 10 of Bass14 – Made in the moment. Many interviews will be used with both the artist and the public. The piece will be around three minutes and appeal to an audience between 15 to 25 years. The intended audience will also enjoy or have a passion for the creative arts.

 Production Details

A presenter will be present throughout the video, talking to the camera about the event and the artist. This presenter will also record voice-overs providing facts about the artist and the event, which will be played over cut aways showing the public interacting with the event. The presenter makes the video feel personal by speaking directly to the camera, which will attract our target audience as the video will not contain permanent facts from start to finish, which can seem boring to a young audience. The voice-overs provide all the facts as the audience will focus on the fast past cut aways and not become un-interested.

Interviews with the artist, Sweaty Eskimo and the public, will be used in the video, along with a time lapse of the live drawing. During Sweaty Eskimos interview the presenter will be present however during the interviews with the public the presenter will not be seen or heard. These interviews will contain the public saying one or two sentences about the day (How much they’re enjoying it ect).

Each cut away will be short and fast paced, to keep the audiences attention, focusing on the public enjoying the day. A few establishing shots will also be used to show Birmingham’s Art Gallery and its surroundings, since the theme of Bass14 is ‘Made in Britain’.

After this, it will cut to an interview with the public. The interview will be to collect their opinions and thoughts on the artist and the event. There will then be an interview with Sweaty Eskimo about his work and his thoughts and feelings about how the day has gone. Factual Program Evaluation

For my factual program I created a short (3 minute) overview of Day 10 in the Bass Festival – Made in the Moment. Day 10 consisted of the artist Sweaty Eskimo completing a live painting in the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery. For this production I was the Director and organised the production.

This production was completed in a tight schedule of 3 days for filming and editing. The pre-production was completed in a week, and shown to each crew member so they could plan and be aware of what they were expected to do, and which shots they would be getting. By completing this unit in such a short space of time, I managed to improve my time management skills by organising myself and my crew, and prioritising different parts of the production.

The production for this factual program was very smooth. All the pre-production aspects were completed and in a folder on site, allowing me to direct each shot, making sure nothing was missed before the crew left the site. Saima and I also practised using the equipment before the day of shoot, specifically the time lapse equipment, to make sure we were comfortable with using it and could set it up quickly and confidently.

Whilst filming the time-lapse the camera battery kept dying therefore we had to film as much as we could, then run to put it on charge for a couple of minutes before returning to film. Whilst the battery was on charge we obviously couldn’t film the time-lapse meaning the final time-lapse became jumpy near the end. In order to prevent this in the future, I need to make sure equipment is fully charged before shooting and we should look at purchasing extra batteries.

In addition to this, less people than expected turned up to the event, meaning shots that we had planned such as audience interaction could not be filmed. There were also multiple school trips to this event meaning many children where in shot at times. We did not have permission to film children therefore we had to make sure they were out of the shot at all times, cutting them out of the final video. I then had to think on my feet on what I should replace these audience interaction shots with. I decided to film more establishing shots and Close Ups of the artist Sweaty Eskimo drawing.

This unit has been very beneficial to me, as I was able to improve many of my skills such as directing, time management, and communication. These skills are very essential for future work as they will allow me to effectively and confidently fulfil my job role and responsibilities. I can now confidently work through any unit with the knowledge of each stage of production.

If I were to do this unit again I would change some of the camera shots as some of them are grainy, or have too much headroom. Overall, this production was very successful, and I am very pleased with the outcome.
