Termly Reflection

October 17th 2014

Today we created a simple set up for a multi-camera production. I directed, Max presented, Shaq, Laura, and Gemma were on camera and Saima was the floor manager who I used to communicate to the presenter. We had the whole class doing different jobs; sound, auto cue ect. We used two board from reception for the background to make the set a little nicer to look at. There were three cameras to make the multi-camera setup with only one presenter who read off the auto cue. It took a while to set the cameras up; framing wise, but once they were set up we had a short practise run and got straight into recording. I felt a little bit pressured at first when telling the vision mixer what to do since I haven’t done a live mix before, but I got used to it after a bit and enjoyed it. I learnt that I always need communicate with the team, telling them when to shoot, who’s camera we will be on, and when to cut.

From starting BOA I have learnt so much! This past term I have been working on many units; the ones I have completed being:

  • Unit 7
  • Unit 24
  • Unit 44
  • Unit 45
  • Unit 62

There are a couple units that need improvement to reach Distinctions, and a few units need polishing before they are finished, which are:

  • Unit 24 – My script is currently at a Merit and I would like to reach a Distinction.
  • Unit 29 – I currently need to film and edit the music video.
  • Unit 30 – The advert is currently at a Merit level and a storyboard needs to be completed. I am planning on filming the advert again to reach a distinction level.

Skills I have developed consist of some general practical skills such as using all the equipment; I have learnt how to confidently use the software and controls to drive a quality radio show. I have also learnt how to use industry standard cameras as well as directing an event from the production gallery. I need to improve my confidence if I’m working towards becoming a director along with my teamwork skills – I do believe I work well in a team however I find it hard to accept other peoples ways of doing things if they are different to the way I would personally do them.

I believe I did a good deal of work especially in some projects where I felt that a large work load was left for me, however I believe I could apply myself more to keeping my blog up to date. At the start of the term I found myself getting a little distracted by others however now I believe I have been moving myself away from distractions when work needs to get done along with making sure my team is also doing work and not getting distracted.

When ever an opportunity has been handed to me I have tried to fully use that opportunity to improve my skills. ( https://kerrylhatfield.wordpress.com/additional-work/work-experience/ ) Going through a few of my work experience pages will portray the additional work I have completed. I am happy with all the opportunities I have been involved with and would love to continue this throughout the next year and half.
