Unit 41 – Radio News Report

There are lots of different types of news.

  • Political (Elections)
  • General(Appeals to general population/ has a deep/wide impact)
  • Business (Stocks, Shares)
  • Regional (Based on one town/ city)
  • National
  • Entertainment (Affairs, Babies)
  • Niche (Health, science, technology, women, children, travel)
  • Crime ( When writing these reports a sense of respect should be used)
  • Sensationalism (The line between crime and sensationalism is being blurred more and more).

Only some stories are broadcast- a lot aren’t. For example, many people are stabbed on a daily basis however only a few amount of these stabbings are broadcast to the world. There are many different reasons for this, one reason might be for entertainment purposes. If the media can not make an entertaining story then the audience will not watch/ listen to the report.

Our task is to create a two minute news report. It has to contain firstly a big general news report that will target a large audience, so it affects a large proportion of the popularity. Then it needs to contain a political report, a regional report, a sports review, and finally an entertainment report.

Introduction- Hello and welcome, this is your two minute update.

General-More hospitals in England are likely to be put in special measures, the health secretary has said as he unveiled the rescue plan for failing trusts. Jeremy Hunt said as the new inspection regime was rolled out – it started this week – more trusts would be identified that needed turning around.

Politics- Mike Nattrass, the former deputy leader of the UK Independence Party has denied joining the English Democrats after Robin Tilbrook earlier claimed he would. Mr Nattrass left UKIP after 15 years in protest at Nigel Farage’s leadership. Mr Tilbrook was quoted saying “he was delighted to welcome Mr Nattrass” However this was proven wrong from an email by Mr Nattrass himself.

Regional- PM and Education Secretary open new free school in Birmingham. The Prime Minister, David Cameron, and Education Secretary, Michael Gove, have been in Birmingham today to open the new Perry Beeches Free School in the city centre. It is one of 93 free schools opening in England this month, including eight in the Midlands. The Government claims they give parents greater choice and the people who run them more freedom in the way they teach.

Sports- The prospect of a winter world cup in 2022 took a step forward after Europe’s football leaders agreed a summer event could not be played in Qatar. Britain’s Fifa vice-president Jim Boyce said”What has come out of this meeting is that the World Cup cannot be played in Qatar in the summer,”. However the International Olympics committee claim that by moving the Fifa World Cup it would clash with the winter Olympics, which occur in January and February.

Entertainment- Usain Bolt says he plans to retire after the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. But the sprinter told a news conference he wants to win another gold before retiring for good. He revealed: “If I want to be among the greats of (Muhammad) Ali and Pele and all these guys I have to continue dominating until I retire.

What can’t we say on radio?

  • Any bias information. This provides your opinion to the world and could be taken as factual information but instead it is just what you believe or your interpretation.
  • Any racist, insulting remarks or swearing. This may offend the audience.
  • Personal details, whether it be your own or someone else’s.
  • Provide children’s names. They are still young and being on news for a certain reason could hurt their future reputation.
  • Claim facts which aren’t true. This is similar to providing any bias information- it could be taken in the wrong way and you could ruin someone reputation.

News papers are sensationalised for entertainment purposes. They sometimes make information up as well, but get past these rules above by printing a small apology in the newspaper to anyone who was offended by the report. Propaganda is also used to showed a bias opinion but it can be changed to either be in favour or not in favour of the character. The reporters get information for whoever is writing the report, they get information from the location of the event being reported, usually from police or witness’.

Libel is an action for causing harm to a characters reputation from false accusations. It is defamation when it is written but slander if it is spoken.
