The Update Hour

I have been given the opportunity to host a radio show on the school radio. I will be doing this with Laura, Abigail, and Saima. Our show will be called ‘The Update Hour’, we will be informal and chatty. Our aim is to inform the audience of all the new ‘gossip’. After every couple of songs we will discuss the gossip regarding the artist, to keep the music relevant to our show.

For the radio show we created a few talking point which were:

  • Miley Cyrus- Music video’s and new image.
  • Sharon Osborne wanting a divorce.
  • Celebrity gossip.
  • Celebrity couples.
  • Whats concerts are on.
  • What good TV shows are on.

The structure for our show would contain a few of the sections below. We decided to create many sections and just choose a few to discuss on the show (different ones each show), so that the show didn’t get repetitive or boring.

  1. Introduction- “On today’s show we will be talking about…”
  2. Newspaper section- We look through some of the top stories and maybe do a debate on it, to provide different opinions.
  3. Celebrity gossip- This reaches the target audience of teenagers and keeps them in the know.
  4. New song/ Music videos- If something new comes up that sparks a debate.
  5. TV news- Any new shows or controversial scenes in certain shows.

The Update Hour firstly had a slot on B2 Radio from 10- 12 every day but Friday. Our show contained all the new gossip, TV shows, and general news. Our first show was only an hour long to ease us into the process, but for a couple of weeks we had two hour slots. We were very nervous to start off with but after a bit we got used to the process and thoroughly enjoyed it. We managed to fill the links without going under/ over the time limit too drastically, at times I forgot to check how long we had left of the two minute link therefore my voice was cut off by adverts however in our second show I kept my eye on the time to make sure our show ran smoothly. I am very pleased with how our show is turning out and I am very grateful for getting this opportunity.

Our shows got cut down to only one hour slots from Tuesday to Thursday (from 10-11), so we didn’t miss any lesson time. At first I missed our two hour shows but I have now gotten used to doing only one hour. I also enjoy driving the show even though you have to make sure everyone has stories to discuss and they know what to talk about in the next link. When driving a show you’re in control of everything and I enjoy having the pressure of keeping everyone focused and on task.
