Lost: What I think happened…

Waring: Spoilers.

lost-header

On the 28th of July, I watched the last episode of Lost. Wow. It was, just brilliant. I have already wrote a small review on Lost but after watching the whole series I’m now going to tell you all what I think actually happened. https://kerrylhatfield.wordpress.com/additional-work/reviews/lost/

So as I stated in my previous blog entry I started watching Lost not for entertainment purposes but to see how the script is portrayed on screen. Basically, to see what I could learn that would help me develop different ideas when creating my own scripts and films. One thing I did learn was that it was really difficult to film Lost. When filming in the jungle there wasn’t much light provided and the even the best camera lenses didn’t let enough light in. In addition to this, I’m pretty sure the jungle was a rain forest so they’d film scenes when it was raining and before they’d finished the scene the rain would stop so they’d have to then create rain of the same speed taking into account how hard it was coming down. This has sort of taught me not to stop a production if it gets a bit more difficult to film – Just role with it and find solutions to your problems!

So my brother broke down what was happening in each episode by referring to ‘Lostpedia’. So instead of me getting really confused, trying to figure out what this and that was, I’d ask my brother and he’d find an answer for me. It got to the point where I’d be asking things that didn’t really matter… When Locke didn’t type the numbers in the Swan Hatch 5 hieroglyphics are shown and I was asking for their meaning… I still don’t really understand what they mean but have a read and see if you get it. http://lostpedia.wikia.com/wiki/Hieroglyphs/Theories

So throughout season six, the audience view flash sideways; imagine these as a parallel universe. We think we are viewing what would happen if the island didn’t exist or if it sunk (as we see it on the bottom of the ocean).

We see all the characters living their life as if the plane never crashed. Until Desmond meets Charlie. Charlie says he met the love of his life as he was choking on his drugs trying to hide them by swallowing them. The woman he describes is Claire but obviously in this world/ life he hasn’t met her yet. Charlie attempts to help Desmond remember the island and his other life by nearly killing him by steering the car the sea. Desmond does remember and visits Daniel Faraday who also states he remembers as he shows Desmond  the equations he has written when he is a musician and has no idea what the equations mean.

One by one we see the characters from this world/ life remember each other and the island. At first I was confused as to how these worlds are connected but I have a theory! So this world where the plane never crashed is a purgatory, therefore when Jack dies on the island his life goes from being on the island back to the first episode where Jack is on the plane and it doesn’t crash. His (after) life then continues up to the end of season 6 when they’re in the church. So basically, the flash sideways aren’t shown in order. If they were then we’d see everything that happens on the island up to where Jack dies and then it would play out from where the crash doesn’t take place. (That make more sense?)

So yeah basically everything on the Island actually happened and they were alive and well, so in my previous blog entry about Lost where I stated that I thought the Island was a purgatory and they have to prove themselves to get into heaven… Is not what i think anymore.

So the church scene –

Jack walks up to a coffin which he thinks his dad is in. When he touches this coffin all the memories of the island flood back, and then when he opens the coffin… it’s empty. My brother suggested that maybe the coffin is his, where he’ll be lying since he did die on the island. Jacks dad then appears to which I was like “The black smokes not here anymore and they’re off the island so how is this happening”. Jacks says “You’re dead, how are you here?”

To which his dad replies “How are you here?”

Which is when I realised that they’re all dead :(. But then Jack asks if all the people in the church are dead, to which his dad replies “Everyone dies sometime kiddo. Some of them before you, some long after you”. All the way through Lost you have to remember that it’s from Jacks perspective so in this purgatory he sees everyone that matters to him, coincidentally – everyone on the island. They then continue into the church, greet everyone, and then his dad opens some doors – the doors to heaven.

Fin.

One question I do have though. How the hell did Vincent survive the whole thing. Half of the time he was just running off and had no owner, so how did he get food? Because I can’t imagine him taking down a whole boar for himself… And it’s quite harsh that Vincent wasn’t in Jack’s purgatory… I mean Jack died right next to him! I guess all dogs don’t go to heaven, Ba Dum Ch’.

But on a serious note, Lost is probably the best series I have ever watched and Jin and Suns dead was just beautiful, I may have shed a tear or two. The final episode actually gave me goosebumps and I really don’t care how sad that makes me look. I love watching a series that makes me remember why I’m studying media and gets me excited to direct something similar to that program in the future. So yeah, if there’s ever a Lost film or something, give me a call, I’ll be waiting.
