Silent Movie

Our task was to create some sort of footage for the big screen outside of BOA. There are no speakers for the screen therefore out footage needs to be understandable when audio is not used.

Our initial ideas where:

  • A film trailer- rather than creating a short/ long film we could just create the trailer to present our camera skills. We would be able to convey our ability to present certain atmospheres, without sound and in a short space of time.
  • Short film- This would show how we can create short scripts and use different techniques to present the story rather than only using the audio to tell that story.
  • We should include all pathways to show visitors what BOA has to offer.

We then decided to create a short silent movie. We would use different effects to present an old fashion vibe such as, black and white and cracking on the screen. The short film would have to be very humorous and silly, with stereotypical gestures (melodramatic actions).

Our story line will be based on ‘The first day at BOA.

We dedicate different roles for everyone, however we decided that we can help out with every role if needs be.

Presenter: George.

Producer: Lauren.

Researcher: Saima.

Editors: Laura and Kerry.

Director: Abby.

Camera operators: Eden/ Saima.

Ideas for each pathway/ script:

George will stand outside of BOA with a bowler hat and brief case. As he approaches the revolving door he gets confused about how it operates (Put one foot in, then removes it as the door comes around, slowly keeps trying to get in), therefore he gets stuck in it (Speed up footage of him continuously going around in it). Finally manages to come out the other side into the building (looks a little disorientated).

Dance Pathway- As George enters the building, he gets caught up in a group of dancers who lead him towards the theater. George is squished in the middle of the dancers looking confused.

Stage Management- As George is led towards the theatre, someone from the stage management pathway will approach him with a clipboard, asking where he has been, thinking that he is the main role in a performance. He is pushed towards two actors who are performing a dramatic scene.

Acting- A boy and a girl will be portraying an emotional scene. The camera will pan across the audience who will be crying/ upset, George will enter the scene and take the girls hand and begin to dance and flirt with her. The camera will circle around George and the girl dancing presenting a camera crew- the director will be shouting at George to get out of the scene. The boy will begin to get angry and start fighting with George, chasing him out of the theater.

Art- As George is being chased out of the theater, he will fall out of the door into an art class, ruining someone work, he then will exit the class swiftly and enter into gaming.

Gaming- The black and white effects will be removed and the camera will show loads of new equipment and confusing technology, George will get confused and again exit the class room swiftly, returning him to black and white.

Music- As George believes the hectic day is over, he sits down and behind him a crowd of people with instruments chase him (along with all the other characters he has disrupted?) out of the building.

(Everyone had different roles to do and we thought it would be fair to name what work everyone has done).

Primary research- questionnaire (Made by Eden).

Eden created this questionnaire and Saima and Lauren asked multiple people for their opinions.

Proposal (Made by Eden)

Based on research, we have decided to run with the theme of a silent movie. This is because the screen has no sound. We have researched loads of old movies and decided to do our short film in the style of a Charlie Chaplin movie. We thought that this would be exciting and engaging due to the fact that they aren’t seen anymore. We thought that it would work well as the theatrics will be express well on a bigger screen. We will have a main character that is like Charlie, who will go around BOA on a journey to find out what they are about. He will go through different doors and end up in chaos in every room. We have chosen humour as we don’t want the audience to get bored. The film will be used to promote BOA in a creative way and shine a light on all aspects of BOA. Every pathway will be included and the format is perfect for a promotional film.

So sadly we didn’t get to finish this project, I personally believe that our team struggled with the practical elements of this production. Abby was a very good leader and made sure everyone was working and on task every lesson- I don’t know how she managed this personally since we completed this project on a friday and usually no one likes to work hard on a friday. George completed a very well presented storyboard and was happy to be filmed and act every lesson, however he was distracted easily. Lauren seemed quite distracted from this project as well; I understand that this was additional work and didn’t go towards a grade for anything but I thought it would at least be a good way to become familiar with all the equipment. Lauren didn’t seem to excited to jump into doing anything. Saima did a lot of research towards this project however she wasn’t very confident with camera work like many others. I edited this project but Laura gave a lot of input towards it, she was confident with using a camera therefore helped out with filming however she was sometimes distracted when completing pre-production work. Eden and Saima where the main camera operators however they both were not confident with using the camera therefore me and Laura ended up filming a lot. I was personally happy to teach and support these two but they seemed very hesitant. I don’t know whether that was because they felt under pressure or they didn’t want to get it wrong but they only did small amounts of filming.
